The Local Stake Holders

If local stakeholders gain from sustainable use of the coral reef through tourism, or benefit from tourist arrival, they will protect this asset and may even invest future resources into it. Marine parks and reserves cannot survive without the support of the local people. For any long-term conservation to take place, OceanNEnvironment maintains that it is dependent on our capacity to persuade local people that they will be ‘better off’ protecting the natural system rather than degrading it, by creation of markets for goods and services in an environmentally friendly manner.

In this context, OceanNEnvironment is now looking to integrate local communities in gathering drift wood from beaches and rivers for associates in Hong Kong to produce decorative items for sale in the international market place. A processing factory is on standby to dry and to give shape to interesting product. While the collection of drift wood itself will bring additional income to the local people, OceanNEnvironment hopes to make this product available on line and on site with proceeds going directly to local communities.
