| PREAMBLE - Fate of Shark |
REVELATION One fine sunny afternoon, little Wu Han was trotting along happily with his favourite aunty Peck to find his parents at Excellent Seafood Restaurant. He was looking forward to eating shark fin soup. All week his family had talked about the sumptuous dish fit for Chinese Emperors. But as he was about to cross the road to China Square, Wu Han looked across the road, and saw a 4-wheel drive jeep was about to reverse into a baby in a tiny orange pram. Without fear, Wu Han instantaneously dashed across the road and leapt to push the pram away. He saved the baby, but as he fell, he was hit by the thoughtless oversized 4-wheel drive. While Aunty Peck was abusing the hysterical driver, the ambulance came and rushed Wu Han to hospital. The police contacted his parents who immediately rushed to the hospital to find Wu Han … they didn’t make it to see Wu Han. They drove straight into a very big bus. On the back of the bus was an advertisement panel – “SHARK FIN, fit for Kings, soup worth dying for”. Wu Han woke up two days later and found Aunty Peck sitting next to his bed. “Wu Han,” she said, “you are a hero … you saved the baby, but I have some bad news for you, your mum and dad have had a bad accident.” “Why???”, screamed Wu Han. Despite all the nice words from his friends, uncle and aunties, Wu Han remained very sad. He began running. He ran through town, he ran up hill and he ran down hill. He ran into the jungle and he ran out of the jungle. After running for a very long time, he came to a beach. He saw the big blue sea and soon he was running past a wise looking old man sitting in front of a house overlooking the water. “Hello little boy, I am Uncle Fook, are you lost?” said the old, wise-looking man. “I guess so uncle, but I am very sad,” said Wu Han. “Why?” asked the old man. Wu Han started to cry and told Uncle Fook about how he lost his mum and dad. “Oh, sounds like the spirits of the shark,” said uncle. “But why?” why my family?” asked Wu Han. “Sit down, little boy, let me tell you about the fate of sharks,” began the old man. “Big sharks, little sharks, mom and dad sharks, uncle and auntie sharks, son and daughter sharks, hundreds and millions sharks are killed each year. Bad fishermen catch them out of the sea, slice off their fins, and throw them back into the water to die a slow painful death. While they are drowning and dying, they curse mankind for their fate. So it is bad karma to eat shark fins”. “Isn’t that cruel? Just throwing them back into the sea to die?...” asked Wu Han. “Yes, it is unkind and also wasteful, more over it is stupid to pay so much money for shark fins, which have little more nutritional value than your hair and finger nails,” said Uncle Fook. “That is sad, all the sharks will disappear soon,” said Wu Han, “I want to seek revenge for the sharks, their plight has caused the loss of my mum and dad, I want to be a protector of sharks … I will fight the fishermen, I will change my name to SARSEU Boa Piao.” So this is how the legend of SARSEU began. We will have many adventures to tell in the tale about how he became a Hero of the seven seas. But then that’s another story. Now the moral of this story, be nice to your mum and dad, auntie and uncles and tell them – SAY NO to Shark Fins.
